“Attacks could be indiscriminate and may target Western interest or locations frequented by Westerners,” said the Australian government in a statement on their website.

The government added that the level of advice has not changed and members of the public should “exercise normal safety precautions”.

“We continue to advise Australians to reconsider the need to travel to the coastal region of eastern Sabah, and to exercise normal security precautions in Malaysia overall.”

A spokesperson from the Malaysian Foreign Ministry said they had taken note of the advisories, and had acknowledged the efforts of the Malaysian authorities in strengthening the security presence in the areas mentioned.

They added that there was “nothing to be alarmed of” and that they would “continue to keep foreign missions informed on the security developments”.

“We also acknowledge the fact that foreign missions are at liberty to provide their own assessment of the security situation in their host countries albeit the fact that it may not be accurate or gives a true reflection of the situation.” the statement said.
